On 7 Aug 1999, the 1998-99 Belgian champions Racing Genk made an extraordinary start to their title defence as they fought out a 6-6 draw at Westerlo in a game featuring five penalties and four red cards.
On 19 March 2000, Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata and Colón de Santa Fe, of Argentina, drew 6-6 in the Argentine league. Gimnasia's Facundo Sava scored 4 goals and Colón's Esteban Fuertes, 3. Each team scored a penalty and Gimnasia's Cufré , an own goal. The record was matched on 5 May 2010 in the Scottish Premier League in a 6-6 draw between Motherwell and Hibernian. Hibernian led 6-2 in the 65th minute before Motherwell stormed for goals in the 67th, 72nd, 76th and extra time. Seven different players scored, led by Colin Nish's hat trick for Hibs.
