The largest project in sandbox game Minecraft (Mojang, 2011) is, by far, the "Build the Earth" project, a community-driven effort to build a 1:1 scale version of the entire globe in Minecraft (where 1 block in the game is equivalent to a cubic meter). This was started in March 2020 by YouTuber "PippenFTS" (USA), who released a video asking for build contributions from the wider community. As of 24 June 2025, the various build teams, comprising more than 8,000 people around the world, had completed an estimated 768,020,507 m² (8,266,903,935 sq ft) of the world, which equates to roughly 0.0000001506% completion.
Build the Earth uses a modification called Cubic Chunks to shoot through Minecraft’s height limit of 255 blocks. In addition, Build the Earth uses a mod called Terra 1-1 to pull information from geographic data services such as Google Maps and automatically generate terrain.
The largest team has 3,720 members dedicated to reconstructing New York City.
And why is "PippenFTS" so determined to build the Earth in Minecraft? "I'm just trying to beat the game," he said.
