The World Encyclopedia of Puppetry Arts currently offers around 1,300 articles written, translated and edited by more than 300 contributors worldwide. It is designed and produced by UNIMA's Publication and Communication Commission.
This trilingual publication is also available in French and Spanish (as the Encyclopédie Mondiale des Arts de la Marionnetteand Enciclopedia Mundial de las Artes de la Marioneta, respectively). It has machine-generated translations in 97 additional languages. The work covers puppetry heritage, techniques and new trends, major puppeteers and companies, iconic puppet characters and genres, and the history of puppets in more than 130 countries.
Work on the publication began in 1978, under the Commission's then president, Dezső Szilágyi. The first printed edition of the Encyclopédie Mondiale des Arts de la Marionnette appeared in 2009. The trilingual encyclopaedia appeared online in 2017, and its first printed edition followed in 2019. The project is financed by the French government and managed by the Publication Commission of the UNIMA. It will continue to be updated.
