The Japanese Akashi–Kaikyo Bridge, also known as the Pearl Bridge, has a length, anchorage to anchorage, of 3,911 m (12,831 ft): the main span measures 1,991 m (6,529 ft) and the two side spans measure 960 m (3,150 ft) each. The road bridge opened for traffic on 5 April 1998, 10 years after construction began.

Its construction reportedly cost 500 billion Japanese yen (then approximately £2.2 billion or US$3.7 billion).
