The most federations to register for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers is 210 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Russia, with final registration confirmed on 15 January 2015.
All member associations were eligible to register and this was the first time in FIFA World Cup history that every single member decided to register.
Zimbabwe and Indonesia were suspended and therefore did not play a qualifying game, while Kuwait served a suspension during part of the their qualifying campaign and were eliminated early on.
Bhutan (AFC) and South Sudan (CAF) made their FIFA World Cup Qualifying debuts on 12 March 2015 and 13 October 2015 respectively. Kosovo and Gibraltar (both UEFA) were set to do so on 5 and 6 September 2016.
