On 15 August 2003, US builder Ron Hunt fell off a ladder while using a drill, and managed to fall face-first on to the still revolving 46 cm (18 in) drill bit. It passed through his right eye and exited through his skull above his right ear. Surgeons at Washoe Medical Center in Nevada, USA, found that it had pushed his brain aside rather than penetrating it, therefore saving his life.
