The oldest intact mammoth ever discovered is "Jarkov", estimated to be 23,000 years old. Excavated by a group of French scientists in October 1999 in Siberia, it would have stood 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in) and was 47 years old when it died. The lifespan of a mammoth is about 60 years. The mammoth, which was originally found by a nine year old reindeer herder Guenadi Jarkov 1997, has been named after the boy's family.

Much of the excavation work has been financed by the Discovery Channel and in 2000, the mammoth was airlifted in its 23 ton frozen cube, with its two tusks sticking out!
