The most consecutive long course World Championship swimming gold medals in the same event is six, achieved by Katie Ledecky (USA) in the women’s 800 metres freestyle in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2023; and equalled by Sarah Sjöström (Sweden) in the women’s 50 metres butterfly in 2015, 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Sjöström equalled Ledecky’s record at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar. By the end of the championships, she had increased her total of individual gold medals to 14 – just two behind Ledecky’s overall record.
