Highest-grossing live-action comedy film at the global box office

The highest-grossing live-action comedy worldwide is Ni Hao, Li Huan Ying (Hi, Mom; China, 2021), which has earned $841,674,419 (£680.3 m) as of 19 October 2022, according to The Numbers.

The family comedy was written and directed by – and stars – Jia Ling, aka Jia Yuling, who made her directorial debut with the movie. It was adapted from her 2016 comedy sketch and released on the first day of the Chinese lunar new year. It tells the story of a woman who travels back in time to befriend her mother and attempts to improve their lives. Its box-office success made Jia Ling the highest-grossing female director, as of 2022.

Hi, Mom beats The Hangover Part II (USA, 2011) into second place, with a worldwide gross of $586,764,305. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (USA, 2017) grossed more than $961 million but is considered an adventure movie on The Numbers.
