Johnny Cash (USA, 1932–2003) became the first solo artist to log a 50-year span of chart-toppers on Billboard’s Top Country Albums when, posthumously, Out Among the Stars debuted at No.1 on 12 April 2014. He’d first reached No.1 on 11 January 1964, with Ring of Fire (The Best of Johnny Cash). As of 19 November 2022, his No.1 span of 50 years 91 days put him ahead of Merle Haggard (48 years 192 days), Dolly Parton (43 years 156 days), Kenny Rogers (42 years 319 days) and Willie Nelson (41 years 228 days).
Billboard first published its Top Country Albums chart (then known as Hot Country Albums) on 11 January 1964. No.1 spans (selected): Johnny Cash – 11 Jan 1964 to 12 Apr 2014 = 50 years 91 days; Merle Haggard – 10 Dec 1966 to 20 Jun 2015 = 48 years 192 days; Dolly Parton – 14 May 1977 to 17 Oct 2020 = 43 years 156 days; Kenny Rogers – 21 May 1977 to 4 Apr 2020 = 42 years 319 days; Willie Nelson – 4 Oct 1975 to 20 May 2017 = 41 years 228 days; George Strait – 18 Feb 1984 to 13 Apr 2019 = 35 years 54 days; Reba McEntire – 24 May 1986 to 4 Mar 2017 = 30 years 284 days; Elvis Presley – 14 Apr 1973 to 26 Oct 2002 = 29 years 195 days.
Country legends George Jones (6 Aug 1966), Gene Autry (5 Jan 2019) and Burl Ives (4 Jan 2020) all reached the top with just one album – Autry and Ives well after their deaths – and therefore do not qualify. Haggard and Nelson closed the gap on Cash with their Django and Jimmie duet on 20 June 2015; Nelson went on to extend his span to 41 years 228 days with God’s Problem Child on 20 May 2017.
Cash has registered 11 No.1s on Billboard’s Top Country Albums, including 33 Top 10s from 104 career entries in total.
