The Paper Airplane World Championship, first staged in 2006 and held every three years under the auspices of the Red Bull Paper Wings event, attracted first-round entries from 61,210 competitors in 2022. After more than 500 “qualiflying” rounds, 171 contestants from 57 countries descended on Salzburg, Austria, for the Pre-eliminations and Super Final.
The Championship is contested in three categories: Distance, Airtime and Aerobatics. The 2022 winner in the Distance event, Lazar Krstić of Serbia, achieved a throw of 61.11 m – the farthest yet recorded in the World Championship. The Airtime gold winner, Rana Muhammad Usman Saeed of Pakistan, also achieved an event record, with a throw that stayed aloft for 16.39 sec.
