The largest species of grenadier, or rattail, is the giant grenadier (Albatrossia pectoralis), which measures up to 2.1 metres (6 feet 10.6 inches) in length. They are native to the northern Pacific Ocean where they are one of the most abundant fish.

Rattails (subfamily Macrourinae) are so named owing to their elongated, tapering tails, reminiscent of those belonging to rats.

With adaptations to a deepsea environment such as extra-large eyes, slow maturation and in some species light-producing organs to lure prey, certain grenadier fish have been found living as deep as 6,500 m (21,325 ft) but the giant grenadier's maximum known depth to date is 3,500 m (11,483 ft).
