Norman was admitted to hospital in 1930 aged just 5 with septic arthritis. He spent five years in the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) having his hips fused and learning to walk again. It was a further 18 years before he was fitted with his left hip replacement on 1 December 1948. He then had his right hip replaced on 22 December 1948. Both hip replacements are still working.
