The most Booker Prize wins by a writer is two, and four authors have achieved this feat since the annual literary prize was first awarded in 1969. J. G. Farrell (UK) won with The Siege of Krishnapur (1973) and Troubles ("The Lost Man Booker Prize", 2010). J M Coetzee (South Africa) won with his novels Life & Times of Michael K (1983) and Disgrace (1999). Peter Carey (Australia) won with Oscar and Lucinda (in 1988) and True History of the Kelly Gang (in 2001). Most recently, Hilary Mantel (UK) won with her novels Wolf Hall (2009) and Bring Up the Bodies (2012).
Three authors have been shortlisted five times:
• Beryl Bainbridge (1932–2010, who never won – see Most Booker Prize nominations without winning)
• Margaret Atwood (who won with The Blind Assassin in 2000)
• Ian McEwan (who won with Amsterdam in 1998)
Only one author has been shortlisted six times: Iris Murdoch (who won with The Sea, The Sea, in 1978).
Until 1970, the Booker Prize had been awarded to books published the previous year. From 1971 onwards, it was awarded to books published in the same year as the prize. Thus in 2010 “The Lost Man Booker Prize” was awarded by public vote to a novel from 1970.
