The first three films in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series – Rise of… (2011), Dawn of… (2014) and War for… (2017) – all won Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, one of the main prizes presented at the annual Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards. A fourth remake of the original series (1968–73), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is slated for release in 2024 and could add to the franchise’s success in this category at the VES Awards.

First awarded in 2003, the first two category winners were The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. No film franchise other than Planet of the Apes and The Lord of the Rings has won Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature more than once.

Harry Potter (Prisoner of Azkaban, 2004), Pirates of the Caribbean (Dead Man’s Chest, 2006), Star Wars (The Force Awakens, 2015) and Avengers (Infinity War, 2018) have registered one win. Dune (2021) took the latest award, at the 20th VES Awards on 8 March 2022.
