US soul singer Mary J. Blige (2018 and 2022) won her second BET Her Award at the 22nd BET [Black Entertainment Television] Awards in Los Angeles, California, USA, on 26 June 2022 to draw level with Beyoncé (USA, b. Beyoncé Knowles; 2016 and 2020) as the most prolific winners of an accolade that was first presented in 2006. The BET Her Award honours “motivational and empowering” songs about women. Blige won for “Good Morning Gorgeous” in 2022 and “Strength of a Woman” in 2018. Beyoncé took the prize for “Formation” in 2016 and “Brown Skin Girl” in 2020.
Previous winners of the BET Her Award include The Weeknd (for “Earned It”, 2015), H.E.R. (for “Hard Place”, 2019) and SZA (for “Good Days”, 2021). The seven nominees in 2022 included Alicia Keys (“Best of Me (Originals)”) – her fourth consecutive nomination – and Doja Cat (“Woman”). Blige won the BET Awards' Lifetime Achievement award in 2019.
