The racing tall ship with the greatest overall sail area is Sedov, which can deploy 4,192 m^2 (45,122 sq ft) of sail in optimal conditions. Sedov was built in 1921 at the Krupp Germaniawerft shipyard in Kiel, Germany, as the cargo ship Magdalene Vinnen. In 1946 she was transferred to the Soviet Navy as a sail training vessel. Today she is operated by Murmansk State Technical University, and based in the port of Kaliningrad.


The Sedov has a steel hull that has a beam (width) of 14.8 m (48 ft) and a waterline length of 95 m (311 ft). She has a crew of 240, including 120 cadets.
