The so called "Kyrenia Ship" was constructed in the early 4th century BC and sank some 80 years later less than a mile off Kyrenia (Northern Cyprus), carrying 400 amphorae of Rhodian wine and volcanic grain from the island of Kos. The vessel, a 15 m. long open boat, was found in 1967 by a Cypriot diver. The ship is considered to be the finest preserved ship of the late classical period of Greek civilisation, the times of Alexander the Great. Since the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey in 1974, the boat is under Turkish control.
