Highest-altitude archaeological site

The highest archaeological site is the remains of three Inca mummies located at 6,736 m (22,100 ft) above sea level discovered by a team led by Dr Johan Reinhard (USA) and Dr Constanza Ceruti (Argentina) and funded by the National Geographic Society at the peak of the Llullaillaco mountain in Salta, Argentina on 16 March 1999.

The mummified bodies belonged to children which were sacrificed about 500 years ago and, since they were frozen, they are perfectly preserved with their organs intact as if they had died recently. According to experts, thay are the best preserved mummies in the world.
