Since Luminate (formerly Nielsen SoundScan) began tracking sales in 1991, no US album has moved as much vinyl in a week as the 575,000 copies racked up by singer/songwriter Taylor Swift’s (USA) 12th studio album Midnights. Combined with 395,000 copies sold on CD, 10,000 on cassette and some 160,000 full-album downloads, Midnights posted 1.140 million pure album sales – and 1.578 million album equivalent units overall – as it crashed into the Billboard 200 at No.1 on 5 November 2022.
Midnights obliterated the US vinyl record previously held by Harry Styles’ Harry’s House (182,000 first-week sales in 2022). Swift is third with 114,000 copies of Red (Taylor’s Version) sold on vinyl in week one in 2021. In the UK, Midnights sold 61,948 first-week copies on vinyl – instantly making it the format’s biggest-selling album of 2022 there (again eclipsing Harry’s House).
