First published in 1882, Treasure Island (originally titled The Sea Cook: A Story for Boys) by Robert Louis Stevenson (UK) has been adapted for film and television at least 41 times between 1917 and 2015.
The adaptations have been made in various languages and taken different forms including silent movies, live-action films for TV and cinema release including with puppets (Muppet Treasure Island in 1996), mini-series and anime.
Beyond film and TV, the tale of Treasure Island has also inspired spin-off fan fiction in the form of both books and comics, numerous stage productions and even videogames, some with clear links such as the 1985 eponymous adventure game published by Windham Games and others that are more of an homage such as LucasArts' Monkey Island series, which launched in 1990.
