The first internationally accredited course covering mermaid swimming skills was launched by PADI (the Professional Association of Diving Instructors) in December 2020 to address an increasing interest in state-of-the-art mermaid training across the globe. It offers four student and three instructor levels, incorporating skills such as breath-hold, water safety, mermaid dives, turns, somersaults and environmental awareness.

Designed to cater to increasing public interest in mermaid training and "mermaiding" (the hobby and profession of swimming with a monofin in a fabric or silicone mermaid tail), the PADI-accredited Mermaid Programme allows dive centres and resorts to attract new customers by offering training in breath control, floating and underwater swimming skills. Currently available in nine languages, the programme offers four student levels, ranging from beginner to advanced, as well as three levels for instructors.

The programme is a standalone course, like PADI’s Freediver programme, but freediving or scuba instructor ratings are not required.
