Charles Ginsburg of San Francisco, California, USA, led the research team at Ampex Corporation in developing the first practical videotape recorder (VTR). In 1956, the US broadcaster CBS became the first network to employ VTR technology. The system used a rapidly rotating recording head to apply high-frequency signals onto a reel of magnetic tape. VTR revolutionized television broadcasting, as recorded programmes that could be edited replaced most live broadcasts. The VHS system was invented by JVC in 1976. By 1997 the market for blank VHS tape alone had reached $2.2 billion (£1.34 billion).
