Sweden and Hungary share the record for the most Olympic modern pentathlon gold medals won, with nine apiece. Sweden won gold in the men's competition in 1912, 1920, 1924, 1928, 1932, 1948, 1952, 1956 and 1968. Hungary's men claimed gold in 1960, 1964, 1972 and 1988, the women triumphed in 2004 and the now discontinued team event was won by the Hungarians in 1952, 1960, 1968 and 1988.
