The fastest growing disease in the world today is human immunodeficency virus (HIV), which saw an increase in 2005 of approximately 4.9 million newly-infected people of which 700,000 were children under the age of 15 years. The estimated total number of people living with HIV in 2005 is 40.3 million, and the total number of deaths in 2005 related to acquired immune deficency syndrome (AIDS, caused by HIV) is 3.1 million.
