The longest 20th century house arrest lasted 5 years 355 days. Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi who was leader of the Burmese opposition party, the National League for Democracy, was placed under house arrest on 20 July 1989, in Myanmar (formerly Burma) by the military government and held until 10 July 1995. The daughter of the assassinated Burmese leader General Aung San, she was held under martial law that allows detention for up to three years without charge or trial. It was extended to six years in 1994.
