The first person known to be executed for piracy was an Englishman named William Marise in 1242, having been convicted of the crime in the previous year. Very little is known about Marise except that he was a nobleman’s son.

Marise was hanged, drawn and quartered, an extreme punishment reserved for what were deemed the most heinous crimes such as treason. He is the first documented person to be executed using this method.
