Most dresses worn at Oscar ceremonies sold at auction

A record 56 dresses and evening gowns that had been worn to Academy Awards ceremonies by actresses such as Elizabeth Taylor (UK), Sharon Stone and Uma Thurman (both USA) were auctioned at "Unforgettable: Fashion of the Oscars" at Christie's, New York, USA, on 18 March 1999. A total of $786,120 (£479,500) was donated to American foundation For Aids Research (AmFAR).  The most valuable item was a blue and violet faille-crepe dress worn by Elizabeth Taylor to the 1969 Academy Awards.  It sold for $167,500 (£102,175).
