The greatest number of hostages held by a terrorist organization was over 500 people. The hostages were detained by Tupac Amaru terrorists at the Japanese Embassy in Lima, Peru on December 17, 1996. The majority of the hostages were gradually released and the final 72 were rescued when Peruvian commandos stormed the embassy on April 22, 1997, killing all four rebels, including their leader Nestor Cerpa.
