The romantic comedy-drama Shall We Dance? (Japan, 1996) dominated the 20th Japan Academy Film Prize on 29 March 1997, winning 13 awards for best Film, Actor (Kôji Yakusho), Actress (Tamiyo Kusakari), Supporting Actor (Naoto Takenaka), Supporting Actress (Eri Watanabe), Director (Masayuki Suô), Screenplay (Masayuki Suô), Cinematography (Naoki Kayano), Lighting (Tatsuya Osada), Editing (Jun’ichi Kikuchi), Art Direction (Kyôko Heya), Music Score (Yoshikazu Suô) and Sound (Kiyoshi Yoneyama). Kusakari was also one of the eight recipients of the Academy’s Newcomer of the Year award.


Reiko Kusamura received a Best Supporting Actress nod alongside winning co-star Watanabe and was the only nomination for Shall We Dance? that failed to win at the 20th Japan Academy Film Prize. The Twilight Samurai (2002) won 12 awards from 14 nominations (plus Newcomer of the Year) at the 2003 ceremony, and Always: Sunset on Third Street (2005) also won 12 awards – from 13 nominations – in 2006.
