In 1980–81, Anne Murray (Canada) scored a notable hat-trick of wins at the JUNO Awards for Artist of the Year (Best Female Vocalist), Album of the Year (New Kind of Feeling and Anne Murray’s Greatest Hits) and Single of the Year (I Just Fall in Love Again and Could I Have this Dance), beating the likes of Prism, Rush and Joni Mitchell to the top accolades. Subsequently, Tom Cochrane (1992), Alanis Morissette (1996), Sarah McLachlan (1998), Michael Bublé (2006), Nelly Furtado (2007), Feist (2008), The Weeknd (2016 and 2021), Shawn Mendes (2019) and Charlotte Cardin (2022) have repeated the feat by landing all three categories at the same ceremony.
Montreal’s Cardin was the 10th artist – and the sixth female – to win the Artist, Album (Phoenix) and Single (Meaningless) awards in the same year. The eight-time nominee also won Pop Album of the Year at the 53rd staging of the JUNOs, which came from Toronto’s Budweiser Stage (formerly Molson Amphitheatre).
Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd and Tate McRae were some of the artists she beat to win her quartet of trophies. Anne Murray is the all-time leading winner at the JUNOs, with 25 wins from 52 nominations. The JUNO Awards are presented by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) to honour the artistic and technical achievements of Canadian musicians. The first ceremony – then known as the Gold Leaf Awards – took place in Toronto on 23 February 1970.
