The thickest three-dimensional make-up is Chutti, unique to the southwest Indian Kathakali dance-theatre tradition. The villainous Redbeard characters have mask-like attachments, built up using rice paste and paper, that extend 15 cm (6 in) from the face. The make-up takes hours to apply and the colours used, together with the styles of the costumes, denote the different nature of each of the characters. Green represents a heroic, divine character; a white beard represents piousness, while redbeards are villainous characters.
