Production costs for NTV's Trans-America Ultra Quiz (Japan) rose to over $657,030 (then £368,489) per episode in 1990, more than three times that of conventional quiz shows. The show featured ever-changing foreign stop-overs, including Hawaii, Europe and South America - which adds to the cost.

Winning prizes have varied from an island in the Bahamas in 1997 - the catch being that most of the time it is submerged at high tide, to a mountain, albeit inaccessible in 1995.

The programme begins with 50,000 contestants who are gradually eliminated until there are 100 who can pack their bags and go to Tokyo airport. After a few more questions, 50 are allowed to board the plane.
