Arkells (Canada) have won six Group of the Year trophies at the JUNO Awards, in 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021–23.
At the 2023 ceremony in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on 13 March, Hamilton’s alternative rock quintet became only the third band to win Group of the Year for three years in a row, following Loverboy (1982-84) and Blue Rodeo (1989-91).
The Jim Cuddy/Greg Keelor-fronted country-rockers Blue Rodeo have won five Group of the Year prizes at the JUNOS between 1989 and 2008. They shared the record for the most wins in the category with Arkells until 2023.
Arkells – fronted by Max Kerman and Mike DeAngelis – were also nominated for Group of the Year in 2017 and 2024, when the winners were, respectively, The Tragically Hip and the all-female quartet The Beaches.
Previous Group of the Year winners include The Guess Who (1970-71), Heart (1977), Rush (1978-79), Barenaked Ladies (1993, 1999 and 2001), Nickelback (2002, 2004, 2006 and 2009) and Loud Luxury (2020).
The JUNO Awards are presented annually by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to honour the artistic and technical achievements of Canadian musicians. The first ceremony – then known as the Gold Leaf Awards – took place at St Lawrence Hall in Toronto on 23 February 1970.
