First non-English-language show to be nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards

On 12 July 2022, Netflix’s Squid Game (South Korea) picked up a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series ahead of the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards on 12 September. Executive producers Hwang Dong-hyuk and Kim ji-yeon were up for the award, but the multi-nominated HBO series Succession took the honours.

Squid Game won two awards (from seven main-ceremony nominations) at the 74th Primetime Emmys: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, aka Player 456, in Episode 6, “Gganbu”) and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Hwang Dong-hyuk for Episode 1, “Red Light, Green Light”). They were the first-ever Korean/Asian actors to win in their respective categories.
