The first quadruple axel in a figure skating competition was performed by Ilia Malinin (USA) at the US International Classic in Lake Placid, New York, USA, on 14 September 2022.

The axel is the only jump in figure skating with a forward take-off, meaning that a quadruple actually comprises four-and-a-half revolutions. Only two other skaters in history – Yuzuru Hanyu and Artur Dmitriev Jr – had even attempted a quad axel in competition before the 17-year-old Malinin successfully landed it during his Free Skating routine at Lake Placid. It is the last jump to be successfully performed as a quadruple.
