On 8 Nov 1996 one-hour-old Cheyenne Pyle became the youngest ever patient to undergo a transplant when she received a donor heart at Jackson Childrens Hospital, Miami, Florida, USA. The six-hour operation, performed by Dr Richard Perryman, involved draining Cheyennes blood and cooling her body to 17°C (62.6°F), the temperature at which organs cease to function. Dr Perryman then had to complete the transplant within an hour to prevent damage to her other organs. Cheyennes new heart was the size of a ping-pong ball.
