Erected in 2010 and first lit on 14 October that year, the Rheinquelle Lighthouse stands at 2,046 m (6,713 ft) above sea level in Sedrun in the Oberalp Pass, connecting the village of Andermatt to the Surselva Region of Graubünden, Switzerland. Although not used as a navigational aid – being located some 400 km (250 mi) from the nearest coast – the structure was created to celebrate the Rhine River and encourage more tourism to the area.
The Oberalp Pass area is the source of the River Rhine which flows through six countries: Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands. As such, the lighthouse is modelled on a lighthouse that once stood at the estuary of the Rhine at the Hook of Holland near Rotterdam, Netherlands.
The 14-m-tall (46-ft) lighthouse sits alongside the Rheinquelle Information Centre.
