The longest mullet hairstyle measured for an established mullet competition is 172.72 cm (5 ft 8 in; 68 in), as sported by Tami Manis of Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, in the "Femullet" division of the 2022 US Mullet Championships. She finished in second place.

Tami's hair was measured when wet. She considers 9 February 1990 to be her mullet's birthday, as this was the last time she had the back cut. "I'm blessed with good genes!" she answered when asked how she manages to grow her hair so long and thick.

Tami took home the $300 second-place prize, losing out to fellow competitor Alexa Lindsey of Holland, Michigan, USA, who earned $500.

The US Mullet Championships is the largest competition of its kind in the world in terms of the number of applicants: upwards of 1,000 each year. According to its founder, Kevin Begola, the mullet - the “business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back" hairstyle - has been around since the time of Ancient Greece, and he cites The Iliad as proof, quoting Homer's description of men with “their forelocks cropped, hair grown long at the backs.”

The style has ebbed in and out of popularity over the years. It peaked in popularity in the 1980s thanks to advocates such as actor Patrick Swayze and country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, but by the time the Beastie Boys released their song “Mullet Head” in 1994, its was on its way out. However, it didn't quite die off - in 2010, the Cultural Ministry of Iran had to ban the style for being "too decadent" - and Begola believes that the time is right for a resurgence, particularly following the close of so many hair salons in the COVID-19 pandemic.
