On 28 August 2022, “Envolver” by Anitta (Brazil, b. Larissa de Macedo Machado) took the honours in the Best Latin category at the MTV Video Music Awards, staged at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, USA. Anitta was the first solo female – and the first Brazilian artist – to win the Best Latin award, seeing off competition from the likes of Bad Bunny and Daddy Yankee.
Since its inauguration in 2010, previous winners in this category have included J Balvin and Willy William (“Mi Gente”) and Billie Eilish and Rosalía (“Lo Vas a Olvidar”).
Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and Karol G have all been nominated in the category as solo artists.
