Richest media tycoon

The richest media tycoon is Michael Bloomberg (USA), owner of financial data and media company Bloomberg, whose personal fortune is $50 billion (£37.4 billion) according to estimates published by Forbes on 6 March 2018.

Michael Bloomberg studied electrical engineering at university, followed by an MBA from Harvard Business school. In 1973 he became a partner at the investment firm Salomon Brothers, and during his time there developed a revolutionary computerised financial reporting and analysis system. In 1981 he struck out on his own, selling an upgraded and expanded financial reporting system to Wall Street firms. Bloomberg expanded from financial reporting to more general business news in the early 1990s.

In addition to running his media and business empire, Bloomberg also served as mayor of New York City from 2002 to 2013.
