At 7,570 m (24,835 ft), Kangkar Pünzum in Bhutan is ranked as the world's 40th highest peak, and the highest mountain yet to be climbed. Unsuccessful attempts were made to summit the peak in the 1980s, then in 1994, a partial of ban of mountaineering in the country was declared. Since 2003, all climbing in Bhutan has been outlawed – for religious reasons – so it could remain unclimbed for many years to come.
As of March 2017, the mountains above 7,000 m which are still unclimbed are:
Kangkar Pünzum (7,570 m); Lapche Kang Ii (7,250 m); Apsarasas Kangri I (aka "Apsarasas III", 7,243 m); Karjiang I (7,221 m); Tongshanjiabu (aka Gyalbu Kangri, 7,207 m); Praqpa Kangri I (7,134 m); Mandu Kangri (7,127 m); Sanglung (7,095 m); Link Sar (7,041 m); Shudu Tsenpa (7,024 m).
