Vijaya Nirmala of Hyderabad, India has directed 42 feature films since 1972.
Nirmala was the first women director in India and is the mother of the actor Naresh.
She made her debut in films at the age of seven in Matsya Rekha and since then as appeared in more than 250 films in both Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. All the films she has subsequently directed were also made in these three languages.
During the making of the film Sakshi in which she played the heroine, she decided to persue another career, making her directorial debut in 1972 with Meena (Ind 1973), followed by Devadas (Ind 1974).
Married to the actor Krishna, they appeared together in 47 films during her acting career and she has directed him since then in more than 30.
