The Mexican comic Pepín, which printed its first edition on March 4, 1936 as a weekly anthology of comics to eventually become a daily, ran until October 23, 1956 with a total of 7,561 issues. At its height of popularity, sales were estimated at 320,000 copies a day, doubling that number on Sundays.

Sales outstripped its rival publication Chamaco Chico when Yolanda Vargas Dulche joined its writing team in the 1940's, creating characters such as the exotic villainess 'Raratonga the Jungle Queen'.
