The fastest crossing of the Bering Strait - the sea channel that separates Asia from North America - on foot and skis was completed by Dmitry Shparo and his son Matvey (Russia), when they reached Chariot, Alaska, USA on 20 March 1998. They had begun their journey from Mys Dezhneva (East Cape), Russia, on 1 March and travelled a total distance of approximately 290 km (180 miles).
This is the first verified crossing ever by foot of the Bering Strait
