Diede de Groot (Netherlands) took Paralympic gold in the singles competition at Tokyo 2021, defeating Japan’s Yui Kamiji 6–3, 7–6 in the final at Ariake Tennis Park on 3 September. In doing so, she became the first-ever wheelchair tennis player to win all four Grand Slam tournaments, a gold medal at the Paralympics and the year-end Wheelchair Tennis Masters event.
De Groot first completed the full set of Grand Slams at the 2019 French Open and won the first of her four Masters tournaments in 2017. For good measure, she won all four majors again in 2021, plus Paralympic gold to complete an unprecedented calendar-year “Golden Slam”, and rounded off 2021 with her fourth Masters win for professional tennis’ first-ever calendar-year “Super Slam”.
