The most maternal spider is the female of the common European species Theridion sisyphium. The females initially feed their newly-hatched young with liquid from their own mouths. When a few days old, the young begin to share their mother's prey. As they grow older they participate in capturing food by throwing extra silken strands over struggling prey. The maternal relationship ends when the young devour her after her death. Most spiders do not see their young, and in many species the relationship ends when the eggs are laid.
