The noisiest spider is the male European buzzing spider (Anyphaena accentuata) which vibrates his abdomen rapidly against the surface of a leaf, producing a buzzing sound as part of courtship behaviour. This is audible to the human ear, but cannot be heard by the female spider. She can only detect the sound through vibrations.
The male of the American species Lycosa gulosa, once known as the purring spider, is equally audible. He taps his palps and abdomen on dry leaves to produce a purring sound.
