The highest living fish is the Tibetan stone loach (Triplophysa stolickai), found at an altitude of 5,200 m (17,060 ft) in the Himalayas.
World Tibet Network News and the Canada Tibet Committee reported in April 2001 that researchers from China and Japan had also confirmed the existence of three varieties of fish in Puma Yumco, a lake 5,000 m (16,400 ft) above sea level in Tibet. One of the three fish was thought to be a variant of the nude fish commonly found throughout China while the other two species looked like trout. The researchers were specialists from Japan's Tokai University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
