A Finn Dorset sheep, cloned from a breast cell from an adult ewe, was born at Edinburgh's Roslin Institute (UK) in July 1996. Named after the singer Dolly Parton, she was mated naturally with a Welsh mountain ram at the end of 1997 and gave birth to her healthy lamb called Bonnie on 13 April 1998.
Dolly died in February 2003.
Dolly died in February 2003.
News of Dolly's arrival sent shockwaves through the scientific community and prompted debate on the ethics of cloning. The Roslin team had admitted there was no scientific reason why the technique could not be used to clone humans, although they would never do so. Much of the practical benefits of Dolly's cloning, according to the Roslin Institute lie in the boost it gives in the battle to understand diseases such as cystic fibrosis and emphysema.
